İlk fayans doğu ülkelerinde 7'nci yüzyıldan itibaren bilinmektedir. Bu sır Araplar aracılığıyla Sicilya'ya ve İspanya'ya geçti. Daha sonra bu bölgelerden İtalya ve Fransadoğru ilerleme gösterdi.
Yapılışı [değiştir]
Kil, kaolin, kuvars, feldspat ve kalker benzeri maddeler belirli oranlarda karıştırıkarak özel kalıplarda sıkıştırılır. Sıkıştırılarak şekillendirme işlemi sonrasında 900 °C'nin üzerinde bir sıcaklıkta pişirilir.
Daha sonra sırlama işlemi yapılır. 1100 °C civarında tekrar pişirilir. Bu şekilde bir yüzü sırlı diğer yüzü gözenekli bir yapı elde edilir.
Karo Fayans [değiştir]
Banyo mutfak gibi ıslak zeminlerde duvar ve tezgahları kaplama gereci olarak kullanılır.

Kare ve dikdörtegen çeşitleri vardır. TS 202'ye göre 150*150*5,5 mm yada150*50*5,5 mmdir
